I take my main inspiration from the electric guitar designs from the 50’s and 60’s, but I am certainly not stuck in that era. Each guitar is finished with shellac, a natural lacquer that is also used on violins. This finish does not suffocate the wood, allowing the instrument to resonate beautifully. This model is quite similar to the ones Jimi Hendrix used to play. Wow. I really like guitars that have been played well and seen some rock and rolling. Apart from being one of the best sounding Stratocasters I have come across, this one has a couple of issues often seen on vintage Stratocasters. The action is high, strings fret out, the neck bows forward a bit and is laying too low in the neck pocket. The neck is even laying so low in the pocket that the saddles at the bridge cannot be lowered to compensate for the high action. Moreover, the saddles are stuck due to rust, the bone nut moves in the nut slot when doing bends causing tuning issues and the output jack needs tightening. Fortunately a superb re-fet job has been done already by Retrofret in Brooklyn (these people are fantastic, do give them a visit at www.retrofret.com), so after solving the remaining jobs on this guitar it should play great again. Time for some repair and set-up work.
